POC Gender/Sexuality 101 Workshop replaces usual POCcupy meeting!

In order to build our collective analysis, build solidarity, reinforce our inclusivity, and continue in our aspiration for liberation, this Sunday’s (1/8/12) regular 3pm meeting at 60 Wall St will be replaced. Included as one of the “next steps” from the first Day of Healing, this workshop was created and will be facilitated by trans/queer leaders from within POCcupy, along with members of QTPOC 4 OWS and people of color from the #OWS Queer/LGBTIQA2Z Caucus.

Designed exclusively by and for People of Color, this workshop will address a variety of issues including: pronouns, policing gender, mapping your gender/sexual identities, common vocabulary, history, current issues, and how to be a better ally. We firmly believe that a radical, feminist queer/trans of color critique will not only bolster the work of Occupy Wall St – we believe that without our analysis and vision our movements against corporate greed, anti-racism, and government corruption will fail.

#D18! #ImmigrantsOccupy - March Against Deportation/Detention...

#D18! #ImmigrantsOccupy - March Against Deportation/Detention & Wage Theft

RALLY & MARCH @ 1:30pm , Foley Square organized by the OWS Immigrant Workers Justice Working Group followed by a 4:00 pm MULTILINGUAL General Assembly at Zuccotti Park

Immigrants are part of the 99% and on December 18th we will march with the Occupy Wall Street movement to demand immigrant justice including putting an end to wage theft, and stopping detentions and deportations of our beloved community members. As the Occupy Wall Street movement highlights corporate profiteering we would like to shed light on those that profit off our labor, exploit workers and refuse to pay dignified wages. We also march against the corporations who support anti-immigrant legislation so they can make billions of dollars by detaining immigrants in private detention centers and deporting nearly 400,000 people per year.

As the occupy movement goes global we also recognize the destructive role that these corporations play in exploiting resources and labor in our home countries which forces millions to migrate. December 18th is the International Day of Migrants and we stand in solidarity with those world wide who are proclaiming Immigrant Rights as Human Rights.

https://www.facebook.com/events/240820965995020/

OWS Spokes-council replaced with "Racial Justice Framework Workshop"

Last night, the regular Wednesday Spokes-council meeting for the entire #OccupyWallSt movement was replaced (through full consensus) by an Organizers Workshop: Organizing through a Racial Justice Framework. The workshop was led by Rinku Sen, Executive Director of the Applied Research Center (ARC) and focused on building multiracial alliances and viewing the movement for economic justice and against corporate greed as inherently racialized issues. Approximately 300 people attended and the night went off smoothly, with a lot of great work begun.

The workshop was first organized through the POCcupy Outreach Subcommittee’s “POCcupy Your Block”, a People of Color take on the Occupy Your Block project, which has been “calling for the winter months to be a time of teach-ins, open forums, potluck meetings, discussion groups, local general assembly meetings and community building projects.” We are proud that POCcupy has been able to make racial justice a priority for the Occupy Wall Street movement, and for the Spokes, who are charged with making logistical decisions!

For an idea of some of Rinku Sen’s talking points, you can check out an article published by ARC’s magazine Colorlines.com, and specifically an article she wrote for The Nation in November addressing the need for racial justice in the movement, entitled: Forget the Diversity Debate, It’s About Occupying Racial Inequity.

Day of Healing follow-up (replaces usual meeting)

A follow-up to the Day of Healing workshop will REPLACE our usual 3 PM Sunday POCcupy meeting. NOTE: we are not meeting at the same time or place!

At the Day of Healing we built community over lunch and developed some common language and a more shared analysis of power, internalized oppression, and the dynamics of our own group. Next steps were developed and many people felt strengthened and re-dedicated to the work of POCcupy. This Sunday’s meeting will allow us to deepen what was begun and continue the momentum from the last workshop.

Participants from the first workshop are especially encouraged to bring what was already discussed, but ALL people of color are welcome and needed!

Ahmed Hossain is a father, a husband, a taxi driver, an actor and director, and a community activist. He is scheduled for deportation next Tuesday because of errors on the part of his former lawyer. If Ahmed is deported, he may not have access to necessary heart medication and his wife and two American-born children might lose their home.

Ahmed’s seven year old son Tanmoy keeps asking the same question: Why is his father being punished for a lawyer’s mistake? There is no good answer to Tanmoy’s question. A longtime resident with no criminal record, Ahmed Hossain is one of the people that immigration authorities claim to no longer be going after. They need to hear that we will not stand for this.
